Learn how to pick the right PSA sanding disc backing and grit for your project, with clear decision rules for cloth vs. paper and zirconia vs. aluminum oxide.
Quick answer
Choose cloth backed PSA discs for heavy stock removal and durability; pick zirconia grain for aggressive cutting on metal and high-pressure sanding, or aluminum oxide for versatile use on wood, paint, and welds.
Backing material: cloth vs. paper
Cloth backed discs (X-weight) resist tearing and handle higher heat and pressure better than standard paper discs. They are the right choice for aggressive sanding, high stock removal, and applications where the disc may encounter edges or uneven surfaces. Paper discs are lighter and more flexible but wear out faster under heavy use.
Grain type: zirconia vs. aluminum oxide
Zirconia alumina grain self-sharpens as it wears, maintaining a fast cut under higher heat and pressure. It excels at aggressive material removal on metal, weld blending, and heavy-duty sanding. Aluminum oxide grain is more friable, meaning it fractures to expose fresh cutting edges, making it a versatile choice for wood, paint, primer, fiberglass, and deburring. It also works well on metal for finishing passes.
Size matters: 8-inch vs. 12-inch discs
8-inch discs are common for random orbit sanders and detail work, offering good control on smaller surfaces. 12-inch discs cover more area per pass, making them efficient for large flat surfaces like doors, panels, or boat hulls. Match the disc size to your sander's backing pad diameter.
Decision rules for PSA disc selection
- Heavy stock removal or metal work: Choose a cloth backed disc with zirconia grain (e.g., 8" or 12" zirconia PSA disc). The self-sharpening grain maintains cut under high pressure, and the cloth backing resists tearing.
- Multi-material or finishing work: Choose a cloth backed disc with aluminum oxide grain (e.g., 12" aluminum oxide PSA disc). It works on wood, paint, primer, fiberglass, and metal finishing without excessive cut.
- Light-duty or detail sanding: A paper backed disc (not shown here) may be sufficient. For heavy use on edges or contours, stick with cloth backed to avoid tearing. Match disc size to your sander's pad: 8" for random orbit sanders, 12" for large surface sanders.
