Choose the right PSA disc size for your orbital sander. Compare 5, 6, and 8 inch cloth-backed discs, plus grit and backing tips for metal and wood.

Quick answer

Match the disc size to your sander’s pad diameter: 5-inch discs for standard random orbital sanders, 6-inch for larger pads with better coverage, and 8-inch for wide-surface work like floor sanders or large metal panels. Cloth-backed PSA discs handle tougher applications than paper-backed alternatives.

Why disc size matters more than grit alone

A disc that’s too small leaves the pad edge exposed and can cause uneven sanding or pad damage. Too large, and the disc won’t seat flat, wasting abrasive and risking vibration. Size also affects coverage speed and how well the disc handles contours. For a given sander, the pad diameter is the non-negotiable starting point.

Cloth vs paper backing: when cloth earns its cost

Cloth backing resists tearing and edge wear better than paper, especially on metal edges, weld spatter, or fiberglass. It also holds up under higher pressure and heat. Paper-backed discs are usually cheaper and fine for light wood sanding or finish work, but they won’t last as long in aggressive applications.

The 6-inch gap: when to size up from 5 inches

Many random orbital sanders come with 5-inch pads, but 6-inch models are common in professional shops. A 6-inch disc covers more area per pass, which speeds up large flat panels. However, it requires a compatible 6-inch pad and may be heavier to control. If your work is mostly small parts or tight spaces, 5-inch discs are more maneuverable.

8-inch discs: not for typical hand sanders

8-inch PSA discs are intended for large floor sanders, wide-belt or stroke sanders, and some industrial metalworking machines. They are not meant for standard 5- or 6-inch random orbital sanders. Check your machine’s pad size and RPM rating before buying; using an 8-inch disc on a smaller sander is unsafe and ineffective.

Decision rules for choosing PSA disc size

  • Measure your sander’s pad: Check the backing pad diameter (not the disc) before ordering. Use 5-inch discs for 5-inch pads, 6-inch for 6-inch pads, and 8-inch only for 8-inch pad machines. If the pad size is between standard sizes, choose the smaller disc to avoid overhang.
  • Match backing to the task: Choose cloth-backed discs for metal, fiberglass, or any application with edges, heat, or pressure. Paper-backed discs are acceptable for light wood sanding and finish work. For mixed shop use, cloth-backed discs reduce changeovers and last longer.
  • Pick grit after size: Start with a coarser grit for stock removal and progress to finer grits for finishing. The product options list available grits; select based on the material and desired finish. Buying a range of grits in the same size and backing lets you step through a full sanding sequence.

Product facts

Who should choose which size

Best for

  • Woodworkers and metalworkers using a 5-inch random orbital sander
  • Professionals with a 6-inch sander who need faster coverage on flat panels
  • Industrial or floor sanding with an 8-inch pad machine

Not for

  • Users with a 5-inch sander trying to fit a 6- or 8-inch disc
  • Anyone sanding tight contours or small parts with an 8-inch disc
  • Light-duty wood finishing where paper-backed discs are sufficient
