Learn how to choose the right backing pad size and type for your sanding discs. Follow these steps to avoid common mistakes and get the best grinding performance.

Quick answer

Match your backing pad diameter to your disc size, choose the right attachment type (hook & loop, PSA, or rigid), and ensure the arbor thread (5/8"-11) fits your grinder.

Why backing pad size matters

A backing pad that is too small for the disc leaves unsupported edges that can tear or curl. A pad that is too large may not fit the disc or could cause uneven wear. Always pair a 4-1/2" pad with 4-1/2" discs, a 5" pad with 5" discs, and a 7" pad with 7" discs.

Attachment types: rigid vs flexible

Resin fiber discs require a rigid thermoplastic backing pad to transfer grinding pressure efficiently. Hook & loop and PSA discs need a softer, cushioned pad that matches the disc's backing. Using a rigid pad for a hook & loop disc can cause the disc to slip or wear prematurely.

How to match a backing pad to your sanding disc

  1. Check disc diameter and arbor size: Measure the disc diameter and confirm the arbor hole size (usually 5/8"-11 for angle grinders). Choose a backing pad with the same diameter and arbor thread. A mismatch in diameter or thread will prevent the pad from mounting safely.
  2. Select the pad type for your disc backing: For resin fiber discs, use a rigid thermoplastic backing pad. For hook & loop or PSA discs, use a flexible cushioned pad. Never mix a rigid pad with a flexible disc. Using the wrong pad type can cause disc slippage, poor finish, or premature wear.
  3. Match the pad to your grinder speed: Ensure the pad's maximum RPM rating exceeds your grinder's no-load speed. Most resin fiber pads are rated for 10,000+ RPM, but always verify. Over-speeding a pad can cause it to crack or shatter.
  4. Inspect the pad before each use: Look for cracks, worn threads, or heat damage. Replace a damaged pad immediately to avoid disc failure or injury. A small crack can grow quickly under load and lead to disc ejection.
